The retired in Edinburgh to hold an art exhibition in the Nursing House

The retired was born in Latvia, but his family moved to Canada in 1948 after the country was included by the Soviet Union.

His sister, who still lives in Canada, is a professional painter, and keeps her artwork alongside his father’s paintings in his room in Cramond Resident.

Mr. Birkhans said: “I have never considered an artist, and I do not claim to be one now. But drawing was a great way to keep my mind active.

“It has always seen nature, and a lot of my work is inspired by the world outside my window.

“The exhibition was not my idea – my daughters encouraged me to share my work, and I look forward to seeing how people react to it.” =

“I started drawing flowers abroad, and developed from there. My daughters send me pictures of the places they know, I love, and I draw from memory and imagination and a small technical license.

“Who knows? Maybe another person asked them to pick up the paint brush, regardless of their age.”
