You didn’t even know a vampire when you were fell asleep?
No, it was a surprise. So my initial idea was, “Stand, what is happening?” And then when you read the story, while you see how all these things mix with the thirties of the twentieth century, Jim Crow and the ban, and you see how all these elements connect to music, I thought it would be a really different thing. It was risky, but something would be really influential.
Was he behaving with something that you always contemplated to follow?
When I gave this opportunity, it was not. I was on a tour. I truly immersed myself on the musical side, working, producing my things and working to build an audio. This was the main focus and still today. But when this opportunity came, I ended up as an opportunity to really enhance myself in everything. When you were a child, you are always a family clown – just do things to try to make people laugh. So I finally felt that this was something I would have surpassed. When this opportunity came, that was something I had to do.
How long have you had to learn to play the blues guitar?
Certainly not much time. We had two months for me to prepare. I started working with Randy Boland, Who is the great guitarist, and we got it to help me learn the basics. Lee Ryan sent a basic blouse running menu to different artists. I was traveling to Feli to perform the guitar with Randy, and sent us a guitar that resonated, which I had never tampered with. This was something new. The entire side of the slide was something that was a challenge. I felt that the more time, the more you got enough to get out there and start playing.
Since this was your first movie, were you tense?
I remember it was really reading the table – the moment I was like, “Wow, well, I am here now. I have to deliver it.” It was the destruction of the nerves. But at the same time, I felt I was supposed to be there. I felt that I was supposed to be there, and I aim to enjoy and learn from the amazing people around me.
The first scene that we actually launched was the car scene with smoke, stack and Sami, and they performed “travel”. I remember to wake up on that day, only practice and prepare. We were on the sugar cane farm, and it was like 100 degrees. We were in wool suits. But he was incredible. Energy and adrenaline were definitely working on that day.
How to describe work with Michael B. Jordan playing twins?
His dedication is really something that inspired me all the time. I think this also inspired everyone – only to find out how he dismantled those characters, how he would plan their different characters and the reasons that make them do things. When he walked in the room, you knew any twin. There was no doubt about it.
