A source said he represented a “great return” after Sir Kerr Starmer Jenkins refused as a national security adviser in August.

They said: “Marines are happy. They take over the leadership of the navy. But Admiral is in mourning.”

Jenkins is scheduled to replace the Admiral Sir Ben Ki later this year.

The royal naval commando is part of the navy but they specialize in amphibious soldiers – such as storming beaches and the Arctic War – not sailing.

They depend on warships, submarines and aircraft for the navy to obtain their operations.

The navy usually leads a professional marine officer.

Jenkins was the largest candidate to make progress after jumping on two ranks to reach the general in 2022.

He was strongly supported by Defense Chief of Defense, Sir Tony Radakin, and Radakin’s choice of the army leadership – which angered the competing service and was delivered by the Conservative Party ministers.

It is not clear whether he intends to change his rank to the Admiral when he takes the highest maritime role.

Jenkins, who was commissioned in 1990, recounts his hobbies as “sailing, skiing and creative writing”.
