The captain has been battling injuries for more than month: First a strained oblique suffered in a game against the Dallas Stars, then an undisclosed lower body injury suffered during his efforts to return to action.
Hughes finally skated with his teammates again this week, sporting a non-contact jersey during Tuesday’s morning skate.
After Wednesday’s 4-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens, Hughes’s gear was packed up along with his teammates’ and taken on the flight to Calgary.
At the end of the post-game press conference with Rick Tocchet, the Canucks’ head coach confirmed that Hughes may be an option to play against the Flames.
“Good possibility, he could be in,” the coach replied to the query, posed as he stepped away from the podium.
Wednesday’s game is a must-win situation for the Canucks, who are now one point back of the Flames. Calgary has a game in hand.
