Armed clashes erupted in the capital of Libya, Tripoli, on Monday evening, after reports of the assassination of a senior military commander.

SSA was established in 2021 by the National Unity Government to maintain security in the capital and combat organized crime.

The mission of the United Nations support in Libya (Usmil) said it was “It is closely monitoring reports on military accumulation and escalation tensions in Tripoli and the wider western region.”

“We urgently call on all parties to cancel the escalation of the situation immediately, refrain from any provocative measures, and resolve disputes through dialogue,” The mission said in a statement.

Libya was sent to the civil war in 2011 after a NATO uprising, which led to the death of the ruler for a long time, Muammar Gaddafi. The fighting eventually resulted in the stalemate between the competing governments in Tripoli, in the western part of the country, and tobruk in the east.

The last major clashes occurred between militia groups in Tripoli in August 2023, leaving 55 dead and about 150 injuries. In February 2025, Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs, Adel Gamma, escaped an assassination attempt.
