The deputy urges the government to stop the economic decline after Britain’s exit from the European Union

Imagine checking your watch every hour to find the country more than a million pounds.
This is not a distant economy lesson. They are real families for high bills, companies paralyzed by the red tape, and young people denied the opportunity to study and work throughout Europe.
With the upcoming UK and European Union Summit on May 19, the government has an unprecedented opportunity to stop this decline. It is not enough to modify the edges of our broken arrangements – we need a bold reset that rebuild the partnership that we lost. Britain needs real work, not another round of successful measures that disguise as penetration.
First, the summit should be placed in the movement’s negotiations for the nearest possible trading relationship with the European Union, while re -entering the customs union as a vital first step. Free friction trade would save our factories, farms and workers from the suffocating barriers that led to increased costs, the delay in delivery and payment of investment abroad. It will restore supply chains that have kept our competitive industries, and giving companies the certainty they need to innovate and export commodities.
“A puppy has been sold with Britain’s exit from the European Union, and we cannot pretend otherwise.”
The same is important to restore freedom of movement, from the movement of young people. Re -joining the Erasmus program and the creation of a youth visa system similar to the Aussies system will already allow students and youth to live, learn and launch their career throughout Europe. These are not luxuries. It is a lifeline for ambition, cultural exchange and joint prosperity that will form the future of Britain and enhance relations between neighbors.
The government must also pressure to reorganize our cooperation in defense and security. From electronic attacks to epidemics to regional flash points such as modern tensions between India and Pakistan, we know that hundreds or thousands of miles can have immediate repercussions here at home. Our safety depends on joint intelligence, coordinated diplomacy, and joint development efforts.
Defense is not only for bombs and guns. It is related to human security, the prevention of conflict and the next reconstruction. Enhancing security cooperation with Europe means standing to the shoulder to facing current and future challenges; Not only Putin’s war on the borders of Europe, but also biological security threats, electronic heat, and climate change.
Talking about climate change, there is a clear quick victory that we need to see from the top. The mechanism of carbon borders in the European Union began to combat carbon leakage in 2023, with full planning for implementation of 2026, while our own scheme does not come into effect until 2027, and with it Many more exemptions than the European Union scheme To prepare. If we continue to delay, British companies will face unfair competition, and our leading climatic obligations in the world will collapse. This carbon tariff is necessary to protect jobs, enhance clean technological innovation and protect the planet for future generations.
These goals are practical and currently investigating if the government chooses to make it a major priority. But even if everyone is agreed upon, we will remain in a worse position than we were before Britain left the European Union.
The Green Party’s policy is that the UK must re -join the European Union as soon as the local political situation is favorable. It is clear that the majority of Britons feel the same. For two years, Each poll showed that more than half of the British believe that leaving the European Union was a mistake. A puppy has been sold with Britain’s exit from the European Union, and we cannot pretend otherwise.
“We can choose cooperation on isolation, ambition to decline, and hope for fear”
As a former member of the European Parliament, I saw cooperative institutions in Europe to provide stability, opportunity and joint progress. At this summit, we must have the courage to admit that leaving was a mistake, and the best of our future lies with Europe.
Other than others – Trump, is anyone? They are not a substitute for the nearest possible relationship with our neighboring neighbors and the largest commercial partners. So let’s scream from the roofs of the homes: the question is not whether we should join this, it is when. I call on the Prime Minister to seize this moment to start discussions about what the European Union will include-with the awareness that the world has changed significantly since Britain’s exit from the European Union, and that there is a generally consistent majority in the United Kingdom to support the membership of the European Union. Britain’s future belongs to Europe, and our ambition must be as limits like the opportunities it adopted once together.
Joining the European Union will demand a clear political courage and a clear road map: forging new alliances, joining standards, and supporting the mobilization of members. But the leadership did not revolve around playing safely. It comes to facing harsh facts, presenting ordinary people, and depicting a future that reflects our ideals.
Unfortunately, this axis can be from renewal. We can choose cooperation on isolation, ambition to decline, and hope for fear. We can harness the strength of collective progress to address climate collapse, defend democracy and build economies that work for everyone.
Britain deserves better than economic shrinkage, commercial barriers and broken promises. Our best days do not lie to stand up to each other, but to stand side by side with our European neighbors. This is the moment when the renovation, rebuilding and a way to join – the audience is ready, and the time now.
